Why the first 10 seconds count

Visitors decide fast. Your website should be ready.

People decide quickly whether a website is worth their time. Here’s what the research says.

10–20seconds

People often leave a web page within 10–20 seconds. Pages that make their value clear in about 10 seconds can hold attention much longer.

Nielsen Norman Group, 2011

50milliseconds

In a Google study, people formed a first impression of a site's look in under 50 milliseconds, and they preferred designs that looked simple and familiar.

Google Research, 2012

53%of mobile visits

Google data found that 53% of visits to a mobile site are abandoned if it takes more than three seconds to load.

Google, 2018 (2016 data)

What I do about it

  • A fast first screen. Lean, hand-written code and compressed images, so the page shows up quickly, even on a phone.
  • Who, what and where at a glance. A clear headline that says what you do and where you are, before anyone scrolls.
  • One tap to act. Tap-to-call, directions or “Plan a visit” right on the first screen.
  • Simple and familiar. No clutter, and menus where people expect them.
  • Phones first. Designed for the small screen, then scaled up for desktops.

Before & after

Same church. A better first ten seconds.

Legacy Church in Gastonia: on the old site's phone view, the first screen showed a blurry video crop with no headline. The redesign says what, when and where straight away.

After: the redesigned Legacy Church home page Before: the current livelegacy.org home page
Drag the handle to compare the old home page with the redesign.
Before: on a phone the old home page shows a blurry video crop with no headline
Before
After: the redesigned home page on a phone, with headline, buttons and service countdown
After
The same first screen on a phone.
